A Lomography Store just opened in Los Angeles!

“If you've driven around West Hollywood lately, you've probably seen the sign "What the hell is Lomography?" outside the Lomography Gallery store on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Laurel Avenue. Turns out lomography is a cult of devotion to what used to be an obscure Russian camera called the "Lomo Kompakt Automat." These plastic, film cameras produce pictures with characteristics like over-saturated color, accidental blurriness, and darkened corners (vignetting), which can sometimes make for one pretty unique photograph (or what lomo fans like to call a "happy accident").”

"the Pony II utilizes Kodak's higher quality Anastar lens (4 elements in 3 groups, similar to a Tessar but with the rear element group reversed) in a rigid mount, but has only a single shutter speed. The lens lacks traditional f/stops, but instead is marked with EV or exposure values."

Kodak Kodachrome - 90 Days and counting!
Kodak discontinued their famous Kodachrome film in 2009 but there are plenty of folks still shooting and plenty of cold-stored film available on e-bay.

Dwayne's Photo of Parsons, KS USA is the LAST photo lab that can handle the special K-14 process and will accept Kodachrome up til December 30, 2010. That is the last day that Kodak Kodachrome can be processed.
To celebrate Kodak Kodachrome, Michael Raso has been giving away rolls from his personal film vault and has started the KODACHROME FILM PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT group on Flickr.

It all started with Ansel Adams. Or did it? The concept of visualization, or pre-visualization, is discussed by Edward Weston in 1921 when he states, “Get your lighting and exposure correct at the start and both developing and printing can be practically automatic.” Adams describes his first visualization of the final print, in 1927, when he placed a red filter over his lens to darken the sky when he photographed Half Dome; the resulting print being the famous “Monolith, The Face of Half Dome”.

MEASURING LIGHT!
EXPOSURE VALUE discussed in connection with the KODAK PONY II camera
In photography, exposure value (EV) denotes all combinations of a camera's shutter speed and relative aperture that give the same exposure. The concept was developed in Germany in the 1950s (Ray 2000, 318), in an attempt to simplify choosing among combinations of equivalent camera settings.

ReplyDeleteI'd like to donate a camera as soon as I find time to test it; it's a Russian Fed (I think) Leica III something copy with a 50 mm lens.
Also, if you ever put a screw mount prize together, I have a Vivitar 135mm lens I'd be happy to donate.
